Things That Make You Go Oooooo (October 2014)

wednesday

HAPPY HALLOWEEN! It's the end of October already and it's been a heck of a crazy month and as much as I'd love to get all dressed up and go trick or treating (even though I'm probably too old) I'll most likely bake myself some pumpkin cookies, chillax and watch some spooky movies so be sure to let me know in the comments how you'll be celebrating tonight.

Pumpkin Spice Ginger Cookies (Vegan & Gluten Free)

Pumpkin Spice Ginger Cookies

Autumn is here AKA the season of pumpkin spice so I thought what better way to celebrate than to do some baking. I've never actually baked with pumpkin before, canned pumpkin in not a thing you find here so I ended up making my own pumpkin puree and I had a lot of it so there will be more pumpkin recipes coming before Autumn is over.

Pumpkin Spice Ginger Cookies

Ingredients
  • 1 cup almond butter
  • 1/2 cup pumpkin puree
  • 1/4 cup maple syrup
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon pumpkin spice
  • 2 tbsp ground flaxseed
  • 1/2 cup candied ginger
(Makes 20-24)

 Preheat an oven to 180°c

♥ Mix all the ingredients apart from the candied ginger together to form a smooth batter.

Once the batter is mixed and smooth fold in the candied ginger

♥ Line a baking tray with parchment paper

♥ Spoon equal tablespooned sized amounts of the batter onto the parchment paper so they they resemble cookies, as the mixture doesn't rise too much what you put in the oven will pretty much look the same once baked.

Bake the cookies for around 20 minutes for a soft texture but if you want your cookies a bit harder then leave them in for a further 5 minutes.

♥ Once baked remove from the over and carefully using a spatular remove the cookies from the parchment paper and place on a wire rack to cool

Ice and decorate with "Spooky Sprinkles" for that extra Halloween touch

♥ Serve with your autumn beverage of choice and enjoy!

Rainbow Cakes & Kitty Cuddles @ Makura Cat Café

Makura Cat Café

I just had to visit a Cat Café whilst I was in Thailand, there seems to be an abundance of them now and as much as I wanted to visit every single one I only managed to visit this one, although one is better than none and it's made even more special when it's on your birthday.

Makura Cat Café

Makura Cat Café

Makura Cat Café is located right opposite The Train Market which is one of the kitschest, coolest night markets in Bangkok so I totally recommend a trip there at the weekend so you can enjoy some kitty cuddles and a wander around all the rad stalls.

Once you've washed your hands and taken off your shoes you're ready to go inside and play with the kitties and boy are there some cute kitties in there, I got so excited when I walked in that I almost completely forgot that this was in fact a café until one of the staff came and handed me a menu.

Makura Cat Café

As it was my birthday that day (August 22) we ordered some yummy looking rainbow cake, I have to admit I'm always a bit sceptical of pretty looking cakes in Thailand as they never really taste as good as they look but this cake was quite possibly one of the most delicious and prettiest cakes I've ever had the pleasure of eating, even if you're not a cat fan the cake alone is worth the trip!

Pets bring so much happiness to us and I love the idea of pet cafés because sometimes as much as we would love to adopt a furry companion it's just not possible so a pet café becomes the perfect place for those much needed cuddles, and furry cuddles was something I was very much in need of being so far away from my pooch on my birthday.

This guy was such a cutie, look at that chubby face I mean what's not to love? He certainly enjoyed getting his chin scratched by me and I would have happily stayed there all night and played with him, I must admit I do have a soft spot for the squishy faced cats. I had so much fun there playing with all the kitties that I'll definitely be making another trip there when I'm next in Thailand!

Characters I'd Love To Dress Up As For Halloween

It's week 3 of "5 Fandom Friday" and we're talking Halloween. I love Halloween and it's the one time of year (apart from Comic Con) where everyone plays dress-up and has a good old time. There are so many characters I want to cosplay as but as it's Halloween I thought I would keep it horror themed and go down the traditional route of witches, but not any witches, my favourite bad ass witches from America Horror Story: Coven. These witches are stylish and I adore that each has their own distinct style so I put together some outfits inspired by some of my favourite looks from the show.

Who will you be dressing up as for Halloween? Don't forget to check out my giveaway!

Geeky Clothing Items I Need In My Closet Immediately

It's week 2 of  "5 Fandom Friday" and this week it's all about my fave subject geeky fashion. Now is a heck of a great time to be a geek because there is an abundance of geek themed clothing in stores and some great independent labels which specialise in geek clothing, in fact there's so much stuff now that I'd say my wardrobe is almost solely made up of geeky pieces! My wishlist is so huge it's kinda hard to pick my favourite 5 items (I want them all!) so I thought I'd put together an outfit featuring some of the awesome clothing I'm currently loving.

What are your favourite geeky clothing brands?

5 Fandom Friday: Gateway Fandoms That Made Me Who I Am Today

The Nerdy Girly & SuperSpaceChick came up with this awesome community project "5 Fandom Friday" which sounded like so much fun I definitely had to join in. Everyone has an origin story and when I think back to my geeky past it becomes obvious to me how much film and TV have influenced me and made me the person I am today. Whether we love film, TV, books or video games we've all got a nerdy history. I watch a lot of TV, probably too much, but then geeks do have a tendency to be obsessive about things, so these are the ones that opened the gate and had the biggest influence on the person I am today.

Ghostbusters is the first movie (and cartoon) I remember loving and it definitely started off a lifetime obsession with all things supernatural. I actually remember getting a little flack for liking Ghostbusters when I was a kid because it wasn't a "girly thing" but as my parents told people "she likes what she likes!" and even after those Barbie dolls started to creep into my life I still had them driving around in my Ghostbusters car. Gender plays no part in the things that you love it doesn't matter if you wear skirts and shoot guns, as long as it makes you happy it doesn't matter what other people think.

Admittedly I was more of a Superman fan growing up but I have to mention the awesomely camp and fun classic Batman series because without it I wouldn't have found my love for Supes. My dad told me that my Grandad didn't like him watching this when he was growing up because he thought it was silly (he's not wrong!) so he was a little jealous when my Grandad let me watch it. This series was the one that introduced me to the superhero world which is obviously a major part of my life now and despite its cheesiness I still love it and Adam West is definitely high on the list of my favourite Batmen, POW!

Growing up I was obsessed with all things ghostly and then The X-Files came along and opened up a whole new world for me, aliens. I used to wear a long black coat to school and pretend I was Scully, I loved her she was smart and fierce and everything I wanted to be. I collected all the toys, the trading cards, read the comics, the books, I wrote to the studio to tell them how much I loved the show and they wrote back, I even made a trip to Area 51! This show had a big impact on me and definitely unleashed my geeky obsessive tendencies.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer is such a big part of my teenage years, I re-watched the whole series again recently and it just brought back all those feelings and all those struggles I had when I first watched it. Buffy and I went on a real journey together her struggles were my struggles and seeing how she got through them and fought back really helped me. I loved the monsters and the stories but more than that I loved how real the characters were, they gave me something to relate and aspire to and I'll always be grateful for that.

If Buffy was a reflection of my teenage years then Supernatural has to be a refection of my twenties, it's been nearly a decade since this show came into my life and it's still going. I love that all the monsters and demon featured are connected to "real" folklore, I love the music, I love the humour and I love the Winchesters. Family is a major theme and "family don't end with blood" which I think is especially true in your twenties as you journey to find your own sense of home.

Be sure to check out "5 Fandom Friday" and share your geeky history with the community!
